About a month ago I went through my beauty cabinet and started reading the ingredients on the back of my products. Let’s just say I was mortified.
Most of them I could barely pronounce let alone knew what their purpose was. I’m talking 13 letter long words that had a whole bunch of z’s and y’s and often multiple numbers attached to the ends of them. Hydroxyethyl Urea? Even my spell check doesn’t know what it is. But after goggling it I found out it was ‘Moisturiser derived from animal fluid’ (aka pee).
As someone who is super conscious about what I put in my body every day, I realized I wasn’t paying any attention to what I was putting on my skin. I had so many products that contained hundreds of unknown chemicals, most of which were being absorbed directly into my bloodstream.
Because the skin is our largest organ, I decided I needed to start protecting it (and the animals used in testing) and make more of a conscious effort about what I was using. After investigating natural skincare products, I came across these 2 simple and effective treatments that I wanted to share with you. Not only are they so easy to make, but all of the ingredients come straight out of your kitchen so they are super cheap to make!
I also trialed these in a mini facial workshop on our retreat and everybody loved them. Hope they work for you too!
HERBAL FACE STEAM
This is a relaxing and refreshing way to steam your face, open your pores and eliminate any toxins that have built up in your skin. All by using fresh herbs.
Coriander, basil, hot water
1: Combine hot water, coriander and basil leaves into a bowl
2: Place a towel over your head and hold your face at least 12 inches above the water. Keep the towel over your head to prevent any steam from escaping.
3: Steam your face for 10 minutes
4: Pat dry and splash with tepid water.
PINEAPPLE, PAPAYA & CINNAMON FACE TONIC
Papaya and pineapple are incredibly high in vitamin C, which promotes the production of collagen in our skin. Cinnamon acts not only as a gentle exfoliant but also stimulates blood circulation.
Papaya, Pineapple, Cinnamon
1: Chop up into a few pieces your pineapple and papaya
2: Squeeze the juice into a bowl and mash up the pulp with a fork. Sprinkle in about 1/2 a tsp cinnamon.
3: Using your fingers apply the mask to your freshly steamed skin.
4: Leave it on for 15 minutes, gently massaging your face, then wash off with water. There will be a slight stinging sensation but this is normal as the fruit acids and cinnamon are working to exfoliate
